Mediterranean Momentum: Accelerating Towards 1TW Renewable Energy by 2030

Event at COP29

TUESDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2024 –  16:30-17:45 (GMT+4)
GLOBAL RENEWABLES HUB, AREA E, C9-11 (BLUE ZONE) – COP29, BAKU, AZ
HIGH-LEVEL STATEMENTS AND MINISTERIAL PANEL

The Mediterranean region stands at a critical crossroads in the global energy transition, linking the world’s largest market economy – the EU – to Africa’s rapidly growing population. Following COP28’s landmark agreement for 11TW of global renewable energy capacity by 2030, the TeraMed initiative emerges as a bold regional response, targeting 1TW of renewable energy capacity in the Mediterranean by 2030. This ambitious goal represents not just an energy target, but a pathway to enhanced energy security, economic resilience, and sustainable development across both shores of the Mediterranean.

With an estimated investment potential of $700 billion and the capacity to create 3 million new jobs in the solar and wind industries alone, TeraMed exemplifies how renewable energy can bridge the North-South divide while addressing pressing climate challenges. This high-level event brings together key institutional partners – IRENA, GRA, UfM, and the League of Arab States – alongside government ministers and non-state actors to strengthen governmental backing and showcase concrete pathways toward achieving this transformative goal.
